5 Beauty Tasks You Should Be Doing…But Aren’t.

It’s a well know fact that there are many things we all do in our beauty regimes that we should be doing, but aren’t. Whether that be because of the hassle of time constraints for cleanse, tone and moisturize or just because it comes to going to bed and you’re too tired to take off your makeup. Many of the tasks below we are all guilty of, read on to find out what exactly you should be doing in your beauty regime.

1. Washing Your Brushes- This is something we should all be doing but because it can be a hassle or some may not even know what you’re supposed to do a lot of us don’t. It’s so important to wash your brushes regularly because they harbour dirt and bacteria that may be causing your spots. It’s recommended to wash them weekly either with a makeup brush cleaner or with shampoo and then left to dry overnight.

2. Clearing your products out- (yes believe it or not they do have an expiration date)- There comes a certain point in every makeup products life where they become a breeding ground for bacteria. As hard as it is to face reality and bin your favourite products, we should all regularly be having a clear out. If it smells or has gone a strange colour, it definitely needs throwing. Most people aren’t even aware that their favourite makeup products have a shelf life, most products have their recommended expiration date printed on the reverse. Just in case you’re unsure here’s a break down:

* 3 months- mascara

* 6 months- stick and liquid concealers and lip gloss

* 1 year- face/ eye primer, cream blush, cream bronzer, cream eyeshadow, tinted moisturiser, liquid foundation and concealer

* 2 years- powder blush, bronzer, lipliner, lipstick, eyeshadow and pencil eyeliner.

3. Taking your makeup off at night (and with a makeup remover)- Yes we are all guilty of this particularly if it’s been a late night the last thing you want to do is go through the motions of taking your makeup off let alone using a makeup remover. Research shows that over 1/3 of us are guilty of this. Not taking your makeup off at night can result in spots, dry skin and even ageing skin quicker. Therefore it’s so important to take makeup off correctly and not just with a makeup wipe but a makeup remover as its much kinder to your skin and is more effective at removing the makeup. Anna Pursglove put this to the test by not removing her makeup for a whole month, the results were

shocking. Just one month of not removing makeup had aged her skin by over a decade, leaving her with red, irritated skin. Surely this is motivation enough to start removing your makeup every night?

4. Exfoliate, Exfoliate, Exfoliate- I honestly can’t reiterate this enough, it’s such an important part of your beauty regime. It helps to remove the dead skin cells which uncovers the fresh new cells below allowing moisturising products to penetrate more deeply. Exfoliating is also important before shaving as it helps give a closer shave. It’s also useful when applying fake tan as it allows for a more even coverage. It’s also extremely important to exfoliate after waxing as it helps prevent ingrown hairs. You can either manually (using abrasive scrubs) or chemically (using scrubs that contain special acids) exfoliate, it’s down to personal preference really and what suits you best.

5. Getting enough sleep- it sounds like common sense? However it’s true most of us don’t get enough sleep which can leave skin look tired, fine lines become more prominent and can result in dark circles and puffiness around the eyes. Getting around 7 to 8 hours sleep at night allows the skin to rejuvenate and repair itself. It’s the time where new skin cells grow and replace older ones, a lack of sleep can disrupt these processes. Ensuring you have enough sleep helps to maintain a youthful, healthy look but at the same time should be one of the fundamental basic in everyone’s beauty regime.

So there you have it, the top 5 things you should be doing in your beauty regime but probably aren’t. At least now you know the effects it can have, I for one know that in future I will always remove my makeup in the correct way- like I said we’re all guilty of this one, aren’t we? Are there any mentioned above that you will be doing in future? Let me know on bellalamodablog@gmail.com.
